"An Artist's Journey Through The West"
As an artist, I am drawn to the great western deserts, seeking out the forgotten places of history, these beautiful quiet spaces, with their stories slowly dissolving into the landscape. I will spend weeks at a time driving on precariously steep roads in my Jeep, Pearl the Burro, to find those old tucked away, forgotten places of the west. This is my art, capturing the historical narrative, in colors and texture.
As I create, my art unfolds like pieces of fabric. I integrate layers of color, using different mediums, such as colored pencil, acrylics, ink and watercolor. In my art, I might include textural layers, such as printmaking, sand, or recycled found objects relating to the forgotten story. My works are one-of-a-kind compositions' that reflect the landscape.
My ideas start by asking questions about these forgotten places in the west and the people that lived there, the old homesteads, with rusting farm equipment, ghost towns and mines. Sometimes, I will just sit quietly, listen and observe my environment, the birds, flowers or a storm on the horizon. From this vantage point, observational drawings are created and photo references made. Information is also gathered from stories that are passed down through families, old photographs, and historical references. My artwork is a vehicle to tell the story, a two-dimensional narrative.
